American Academic Painter, 1849-1903, American artist, was born at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1849. He was a pupil of Leon Bonnat and of Jean-Leon Gerome, at Paris. He made many voyages to the East, and was distinguished as a painter of oriental scenes. In 1895 he wrote and illustrated a book of travels, From the Black Sea through Persia and India, and two years later he published Episodes of Mountaineering. He died in November 1903. 1843 - 1899 German painter and engraver. His family, which had moved to England in the 1840s, returned to Frankfurt am Main in 1850. He studied wood engraving with Alexander Stix (1819-93) at the St?delsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt and later achieved considerable success in this medium (e.g. Glade, 1868; see Zimmermann, p. 9). He was taught painting by Karl Hausmann (1825-86) and was influenced chiefly by contemporary French art. He first worked mainly in Berlin and then in Munich, where he met Otto Scholderer and Wilhelm Leibl, who painted his portrait (c. 1870; Frankfurt am Main, Stedel. Kstinst.). Henri Lehmann
German Neoclassical Painter, 1814-1882,was a French historical and portrait painter, born in Kiel, Schleswig. He was a pupil of his father, Leo Lehmann, and of Ingres in Paris, where he opened a studio in 1847, after having become naturalized. His brother Rudolf Lehmann was a well-known portrait artist.
Raden Saleh
(1807 or 1811 - April 23, 1880) is one of the best known painters from Indonesia and a pioneer of modern Indonesian art. He was considered to be the first modern artist from the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), and his paintings corresponded with nineteenth-century romanticism which was popular in Europe at the time. He also expressed his cultural roots and inventiveness in his work. Raden Saleh, was born into a noble Javanese family. He was grandson of Sayyid Abdullah Bustaman from his mother's side. His father was Sayyid Husen bin Alwi bin Awal bin Yahya, an indonesian of arab descent.
